What to Watch on Thursday: ‘Baskets’ and ‘Legends’ debut

Baskets (10 p.m., FX) – The premiere of an unusual new series starring Zach Galifianakas as Chip Baskets, who dreams of being a clown. When the series opens, Chip is struggling in French Clown School (turns out it would have been helpful if he could speak French). Technically a comedy, but in the same class of comedy as “Louie” – which makes sense, because Louis C.K. is a co-creator. Read more about why I think “Baskets” is grim, but worth the dive.

Also on tonight . . .

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (8 p.m., CW) – In this new series, set in the year 2166, the immortal villain Vandal Savage is on the verge of destroying humanity, so Rip Hunter travels back in time to assemble a team of heroes and rogues to stop him.

Heroes Reborn (8 p.m., NBC) – In the finale, Luke and Quentin help Malina as she tries to fulfill her great-grandmother’s prophecy.

The 100 (9 p.m., CW) – In the third season opener, Bellamy and Kane lead a team into Grounder territory to rescue Clarke, who has a bounty on her head.

Elementary (10 p.m., CBS) – Holmes and Watson pursue a computer hacker responsible for three murders, including the murder of a visiting Russian billionaire.
