Lucifer (9 p.m., Fox) – The premiere of a new series about Lucifer Morningstar, who leaves hell to live a more exciting life in Los Angeles. In the opener, Lucifer – the son of Satan, not Satan himself (I think) – teams with a police detective to catch a murderer and becomes interested in the idea of punishing criminals. Based on the first episode, it looks ... OK. It won’t blow anyone away, but the pilot has some fun moments.

Also on tonight . . .

The X-Files (8 p.m., Fox) – In the second episode of this limited series (and it’s better than the first episode, we promise), Mulder and Scully investigate when a scientist involved in extreme genetic experimentation suddenly kills himself.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (8 p.m., CW) – Shows star Rachel Bloom now has Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards under her belt – so watch! Tonight, Rebecca tries to impress Josh and his friends by renting a party bus for a trip to the beach.

Recovery Road (9 p.m., Freeform) – In this new series, party girl Maddie is forced to spend her evenings with recovering addicts at a sober living facility after being caught with alcohol at school. Note: Freeform is the former ABC Family channel.

Reel South (9 p.m., UNC-TV) – Documentaries tonight include “Bending Sticks” is about the 25-year career of artist Patrick Dougherty, the creator of sculptures from saplings.

War & Peace (9 p.m., Lifetime, A&E, History) – Andrei returns home from warm, and Helene finds company in the arms of a Russian soldier.
