What to Watch on Friday: ‘Stranger Things’ by Durham’s Duffer brothers

Stranger Things (Netflix) – This new supernatural series created by brothers Matt and Ross Duffer of Durham, is set in 1983 Indiana, where a young boy vanishes into thin air. As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl. It stars Winona Ryder. Also landing on Netflix today, Season 4 of “Orphan Black.”

The Great British Baking Show (9 p.m., UNC-TV) – The bakers create quick breads for a signature challenge. Tonight’s technical challenge is baguettes.

Homestead Rescue (10 p.m., Discovery) – The Raneys help the Kondors in the Nevada desert, where the homestead suffers from rattler infested trailers, searing heat, sand storms and a lack of water.

Dark Matter (10 p.m., Syfy) – A computer glitch makes the crew turn against one another.

Treehouse Masters (10 p.m., Animal Planet) – For a thrill-seeking couple, Pete builds a 16-foot-high adventure headquarters embedded in three cedar trees and highlighted by a 360-degree wraparound deck.
