The Rev. Dr. George Robert McKenzie, Jr., 85, of Burlington, NC, died on Monday, August 25, 2014, at Hospice Home from complications of melanoma. He was born December 14, 1928, in Wilmington, North Carolina, the son of G. Robert McKenzie, Sr. and Marie Costin McKenzie.
After graduating from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC, he received a bachelor’s degree from High Point University and the Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School, where he was a proud member of the Duke Glee Club.
Bob had a distinguished career as a pastor in the North Carolina Conference beginning in 1953. His appointment was the associate pastor of Jarvis Memorial Church, Greenville. Then he became of pastor of St. Matthews Church, Fayetteville; Director of Youth Work for the Conference; pastor of Wynnewood Park Church, Raleigh; Westminster Church, Kinston, and First Church, Elizabeth City; District Superintendent, the Elizabeth City District; senior pastor of Front Street Church, Burlington; District Superintendent of the Rocky Mount District; and Executive Director of the Conference Council on Ministries.
Following his retirement in 1993, he returned to Front Street Church and enjoyed the role of Minister of Pastoral Care for ten years. He was awarded the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from North Carolina Wesleyan University. Front Street Church honored him by naming him Pastor Emeritus in 1996, a recognition he cherished. In addition to his life-long commitment to the church, he served on the Board of Trustees of High Point University and Greensboro College. He also was a former member of the Board of Directors of Eldercare of Alamance County.
Dr. McKenzie is survived by his wife, Frances; his daughter, Susan Meyer and husband, Hans, of Tallahassee, Florida; his son, George Robert McKenzie III, and wife, Alice, of Durham; step-daughters, Ellen Stanley Ellis, and husband, Greg, of Wilmington, Delaware; Susan Stanley Marino, and husband, Jay, of Asheville. He enjoyed his six grandchildren: Zachary McKenzie, Katherine White, Cannon White and wife, Olivia, Jack White, Frannie White and Blake Ellis; and one great-granddaughter, Madelyn White. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Chason, and husband, Ralph, of Wilmington, NC.
A service of Death and Resurrection will be celebrated at Front Street United Methodist Church, Burlington, on Thursday, August 28, at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet worshippers following the service at the Alders Gate Hall of the church.
