Charles E. (Chuck) Martin, Capt. USN (Ret.), of Fuquay-Varina, NC, died on Saturday, September 13, 2014, following a brief illness. He was 88 years old.
The first son of Ida and O. E Martin, Jr., he was born and raised in Fremont, NE, graduating from Fremont HS in 1944. Chuck went to the United States Naval Academy in 1945 on a Congressional appointment and graduated with the class on June 3, 1949.
Upon graduation, he married his longtime girlfriend, Marilyn “Lynn” Douglas, also of Fremont. He attended graduate school at Monterey, CA, for three years, where he earned his Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering.
His Navy career took the family to California, Rhode Island, Japan, and Virginia. Upon retirement from the Navy after 30 years of service, he worked for RCA (now GE) in New Jersey.
Chuck and Lynn then moved to Fairfield Harbor, New Bern, NC, where they enjoyed time on their boat, the Wandering Star. After Lynn’s death in 2003, Chuck moved to the Holly Springs area to be closer to his daughters and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Lynn, he was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Cindy, and his brother, Bill. He is survived by his daughters Claudia (Robert Kilmer) and Jenny (Don Mizelle), grandchildren Sara Costello and Alex Carr, sister-in-law Sandy Martin, and nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful to the caring staff at Windsor Point Retirement Community and Transitions LifeCare (Wake County Hospice).
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 15, 2014, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Bass Lake Retreat Center, Holly Springs NC. Interment will be in Fremont, NE, at a later date. If desired, donations may be made to Transitions LifeCare in Chuck’s name.
