Karen King Thompson passed away August 21, in Durham. Born in Fort Wayne, IN, to Richard and Audrey King, both deceased, Karen graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School, Duke University and received an MLS from NCCU. She worked at the Duke Forestry Library and Medical Center Library, the Museum of Life and Science and volunteered often for the American Dance Festival.
Karen worked for nearly two decades in the community college system, including as assistant dean at Piedmont Community College. She spent most of the last 25 years representing several non-profits, including the United Way, on the Durham Co. Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.
Karen is survived by her sister Marty Cox of Durham; nephew Andy Cox, wife Monica, children Tyler and Benjamin of Atlanta; nephew Brian Cox, wife Meghan, children Jamie and Adam of Durham; niece Julie Cox of Charlotte; former brother-in-law, Ed Cox of Chapel Hill; former husband Leo Thompson of Raleigh; as well as many friends and colleagues.
A celebration of Karen’s life will be held September 27 at 3:00 p.m. at the Duke Faculty Club LeBar Room. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Karen’s honor to the Durham Co. Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.
