Matthew Blaney Sumrell

Aged 45, residing in Cary, NC, passed away on September 27, 2014 after a yearlong battle with brain cancer. Throughout this ordeal, Matt, who was a lover of music, travel, food and life, maintained his positive attitude and his ever present sense of humor.

Matt was born in Englewood, NJ. His early years were spent in Marietta, GA where he attended Bill Murdock, Dodgen and Walton schools. After spending time working in the food service business, Matt attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY where he was awarded a degree in Culinary Arts. He then worked various restaurant positions in Georgia, Colorado and Florida before relocating to Cary, NC. Here, Matt founded Southeastern Merchant Systems which provided credit card processing services to small and medium sized businesses in the Research Triangle Area.

Matt is survived by his wife Andrea, their sons Glenn and Murphy, his mother Virginia Thomas, his father Ferrall, and his brothers Wes and Jeff.

Matt’s family requests that any memorial donations be made to The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke.
