John Sokol, 81, passed away on October 14, 2014. Born on July 9, 1933 in Yonkers, NY; he was the son of the late John and Anna Sokol and brother of the late Anne “Anka” Reade Hafemann.
John served in the U.S. Navy, with the Seabees, and retired as a carpenter-contractor. He was active within the lives of his children and his community. The children attended St. Bartholomew’s School. John and Ann were members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and St. Bartholomew Catholic Church.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Ann Potter Sokol. They were married at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Getty Square in Yonkers, NY. He is also survived by his daughters: Janet Burlew, Lynne Dehnel and husband Keith, and Laura Sokol, all of Apex, NC; son: John Sokol and wife Dina, of Trumbull, CT; and by eight grandchildren: Jeffrey, Gary and Rachel Burlew, Kyle, Thomas and Kelly Dehnel and Louis and John Sokol. His first great-grandchild is expected in January.
Family will receive friends this evening, Thursday, October 16th from 5-8 pm at Apex Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 19th from 2-6 pm at Duchynski-Cherko Funeral Home in Yonkers, NY, with Funeral Services Monday at 11 am in the funeral home chapel. Burial to follow at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.
