Jack Lionel Todd Sr., 74, died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 12, surrounded by family. A native and resident of Whiteville, he was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, sign-language minister, and in the youth ministry. He was a Trustee Emeritus of Boys & Girls Homes of N.C., a Life Member of Lions Clubs International, and a long-serving member of the Whiteville City School Board. He ran Todd Furniture Company, a 70-yr family business in Whiteville, was on the advisory board for UCB/BB&T for dozens of years, and was a fervent advocate for his community. He was a member of the Whiteville and N.C. Retail Merchants and served terms as president of both associations.
Lionel is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rita Phillips Todd; children Henrietta Todd, Lionel (Charlotte) Todd, Jr., Dan (Karen) Todd, and Wallyce Todd; grandchildren Emmalee, Daniel, Jack, Robert and Lillian Todd; brother Edwin (Mary) Todd, and sister Carolyn (Ernie) Galan. He was preceded in death by his parents, D.L. and Emma Todd, and brother Lamar Todd.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Whiteville at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, 412 N. Madison Street, Whiteville, N.C. 28472 or to the Boys & Girls Homes of N.C., P.O. Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, N.C. 28450.
