Miss Shirley McQueen, daughter of the late Julius and Pearl McKoy McQueen, was born January 8, 1947 in Robeson County. She passed from this earthly life on Monday, October 20, 2014. Shirley was also preceded in death by her sister, Miss Margie Williams.
Shirley grew up in the Piney Grove Community. She graduated from R. B. Dean High School in Maxton, NC. At an early age, she joined Piney Grove United Methodist Church. She held various positions in the church; among them were church musician, United Methodist Women member. She was an “outstanding fund raiser” and she remained a very faithful, dedicated, hard-working member until her health declined. Shirley attended Saint Augustine College, Raleigh, NC. She graduated from North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC. Shirley was employed as a Public Health Educator with the Robeson County Health Department until her health failed. While working as a Public Health Educator, Shirley was appointed to the Council On Sickle Cell Syndrome in 1973, by Governor James Holshouser.
Shirley leaves to share her fond memories a host of cousins and friends.
Services for Miss McQueen will be held on Saturday October 25th at Piney Grove United Methodist Church located at 5135 NC 83 Maxton, North Carolina 28364. Visitation will start at 12 noon and the services at 1PM. In lieu of flowers please consider making donations to Dorcas Ministries at 187 High House Road in Cary, NC 27511.
