Lula Fail Littleton Carlson, 96 passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2014 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Lula was born in Wayne County on October 20, 1918 to the late N.W. and Mary Wilkins Fail. She was married to the late O.P. Littleton and Arnhold Grant Carlson. Lula was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church. She was devoted to her church and was involved in many activities where she used her gifts and abilities to share the love of God. Lula had also been a member of the Home Rebecca Lodge.
Lula leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and support everyone she encountered, particularly those in need. Her enthusiasm and love of life will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family will receive friends in McChesney Hall at First Presbyterian Church from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2014 followed by a service celebrating Lula’s life at 2:00 p.m. in Black Chapel at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Leigh Gillis officiating. Interment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Lula is survived by her sons, Dr. Phillip R. Littleton and wife, India Smith Littleton of Williamsburg, VA, Gerald W. Littleton and wife Andrea (Andy) Untz Littleton of Raleigh, and Dr. Robert E. Littleton and wife Rebecca (Becky) Bumpass Littleton; sister, Louise Kesslick and husband Bob of Greensboro; brother, Jack D. Fail and wife Dena of Greensboro; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews that always referred to Lula as their favorite aunt – sometimes as their “Goldsboro Mama”.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the ten years of compassionate care provided by Dr. Mitchell Heflin, Geriatrician at Duke Medical Center. Love and heartfelt thanks are expressed to her caregiver and friend for nine years, Jessie Whitaker, and most recently Angela Covington, whose cheerful and pleasing manner brightened Lula’s every day.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to First Presbyterian Church, 1101 E. Ash Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530 or to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
