Richard (Dick) Miles was born in Indianapolis, Indiana August 28, 1930. He was the son of Harold N. Miles and Alberta Van Landingham Miles. His family moved to California, when he was a child, and he was raised by his father and stepmother Mable Lee Miles. He was a graduate of Bell High School in Bell, CA. He joined the Navy during the Korean War and was a sonar operator on the U.S.S. Radford, stationed in Hawaii. He went to college at Pacific State University and UCLA on the GI Bill. Mr. Miles was an Electronic Engineer focusing in automated circuit design. Throughout his long career he worked at North American Rockwell, RCA, Univac and Mentor Graphics and was a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
He met his future wife, Carol Joanne Edmondson in Church and they were married in 1955. Together they raised four children, Wendi, Andrea, Howard and Edward and many dogs and cats. The family moved from California to Florida, Pennsylvania, and back to California. In retirement, Carol and Dick moved to North Carolina to be close to their daughter Andrea, son Ed and his children.
Mr. Miles was a fantastic father and enjoyed working with kids. He also coached softball and baseball teams. One of his great joys in retirement was going to his granddaughter Tessa’s softball games and grandson Ethan’s baseball games. He and his wife were active Church members, leading small groups and youth groups including Young Life. They loved jazz music and enjoyed going to many concerts and jazz cruises. Mr. Miles is survived by his wife, four children, 7 grandchildren and his dog Lulu. Memorial services will be held at Discovery Church (195 NC Highway 42 East, Clayton NC) at 2:00 pm on Saturday October 25. A brief reception will be held following services.
