Richard Lee Bird, Sr., 89, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, November 6, 2014 after a long struggle with heart disease.
Richard was predeceased by his first wife, Audrey Hope )McDaniel) Bird and later by his second wife, Anne East Bird; also by his sons, Michael Bird, David Bird, and Richard Bird, Jr.; his daughters, Margaret Bird and Robin Poston, and his brother, Hugh Bird.
As a young man, he spent time in the Yukon working on the Al-Can Highway, after which he returned to Missouri to continue his education and begin a new career. He worked for Mallinckrodt, Inc. for 33 years, first as a Business Team Development Manager, advancing to Manufacturing Superintendent and then Material management Director. He went on to join forces with dear friend, Dr. Warren Jewett in business at Sonodyne America Limited, where he was Vice President and marketing Director. He subsequently became a co-founder of IEP Group, Inc. where he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of the company and its subsidiaries.
Richard enjoyed traveling, was a culinary adventurer and an avid reader.

Richard is survived by his three daughters, Debra (Clarence, deceased) Mars of Raleigh, Donna (Richard) Flagg of Illinois, and Michelle (Mark) Bird-Hagen of Raleigh; two sons, Stephen Bird of Texas and Benjamin (Angie) Bird of Texas; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren; his sister, Betty Haley of Missouri and cousin, Maxine Sowders of Missouri, as well as a handful of “adopted” children.
Services will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2014, visitation at 2:00 with service to follow at 3:00 at the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, 2205 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.
