John Richard Sykes, Sr. at age 88, peacefully slipped the bonds of this world into a glorious reunion with his Lord Jesus on November 2, 2014.
John was one of five children born to Carlyle and Marie Sykes in Wake County, North Carolina. He served honorably in the United States Navy from 1944-46. He earned a BA from the University of South Carolina in 1950 while also leading the Gamecock Baseball team as a slugger and shortstop; and later earned a Masters Degree in Education from the University of North Carolina. He enjoyed a good season playing baseball in the Textile League where he met the love of his life, his late wife Betty Whaley Sykes of Lancaster, SC, together celebrating 62 years of marriage. He enjoyed a rewarding 30+ year career in education in Miami, Florida serving also as Community School Director at South Miami Junior High. He retired with Betty to St. Augustine, Florida in 1993.
He is survived by his son, W. Steve Sykes and daughter-in-law, Trudy of St. Augustine, FL; 4 grandchildren, Jason (Katherine) Sykes, Nathaniel (Alexis) Sykes, Lauren Sykes, and Sarah (James) Gravesen; 5 great-grandchildren; sisters Delores Ussery and Alice Jackson of Raleigh, NC; sister-in-laws, Betsy Sykes and Eleanor Sykes of Raleigh, NC; He is preceded in death by his wife Betty and son, John R. Sykes, Jr.
