Ruth Vivian Batten Ainsley, 96, of Sanford passed away Wed. November 5, 2014. She was born Feb. 4, 1918 in Micro, NC (her beloved Johnston County) to Stratford Culbreth (S.C.) Batten and Lillie Gay Owens Batten. The oldest daughter, she helped her mother with the housework. She began her teaching experience by practicing on her younger siblings, later graduating from East Carolina Teachers College in 1939. She was hire to begin her teaching career by her future husband, T. R. Ainsley, Sr. in Hertford, NC (Perquimans County), and was an elementary teacher in eastern NC schools for over 30 years, primarily in Wilson and Nash counties, ending in Middlesex, NC. She encouraged her students to do their best and to become better persons, leading daily devotionals as possible. She loved God, supported her local church, and was strong in her faith. She always valued and enjoyed family, and honored them by helping care for her father and brother in their later years. After the passing of her husband, she lived in Smithfield, NC near family and later in Sanford, NC near her son and family.
Mrs. Ainsley is survived by her son, Dr. T. Rupert Ainsley, Jr. and wife Margaret of Sanford; two grandchildren, Thomas Ainsley and wife Katie of Phoenix (Baltimore), MD and Karen Meza and husband Victor of Arlington, TX; five great-granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 15 at First Baptist Church, Sanford at 10:30 AM, and at First Baptist Church, Smithfield at 2:00 PM.
