Thunder Road races attract thousands despite chilly weather

About 5,550 runners hit the chilly streets of Charlotte on Saturday in the Novant Health Thunder Road Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K.

They followed all-new race courses in events starting and finishing uptown near the BB&T BallPark and Romare Bearden Park. The 26.2 mile marathon course took runners through neighborhoods such as Dilworth, Myers Park, Foxcroft, South End, NoDa and Plaza-Midwood.

Race spokesman D.C. Lucchesi said runners didn’t seem to mind the brisk temperatures. “It wasn’t windy, and it wasn’t wet,” he said. “The cold didn’t dampen enthusiasm or participation.” Joe DePriest
