A soldier of God, Mrs. Marie H. Ratliff of 299 Gholson Avenue in Henderson, transitioned to her permanent home on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, from Kerr Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Henderson. Mrs. Ratliff, formerly of Raleigh, was born September 1, 1929 in Henderson, NC to the late Effie Florine Miles Hammie and the late Daniel James Hammie. She grew up in Raleigh and attended Washington High School.
She married Frank Ratliff who was from Anson County and who predeceased her. They made their home in Raleigh and were blessed to parent two sons and two daughters.
Mrs. Ratliff made a career working at the prestigious Carolina Hotel in Raleigh and ended her working career at Wake Medical Center. She united with Fayetteville Street Baptist Church in the 1950’s and served faithfully for over fifty years as an usher; today this church is known as First Cosmopolitan Baptist Church.
She leaves to cherish her memory two sons: The Rev. Joseph Ratliff (Charlene) of Henderson and Jasper Hamlet of Garner; two daughters: Carolyn Ratliff of Raleigh and Juanita Ratliff of Garner, three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends at 299 Gholson Avenue. After Sunday, the family will receive friends at the home of Juanita Ratliff, 604 Hobson Wood Court in Garner, NC.
Visitation with family will be Sunday at 7:00 PM at Shiloh Baptist Church in Henderson (635 College Street) with Davis-Royster Funeral Service in charge. The body will be on view Monday in Raleigh at Lea Funeral Home (2500 Poole Rd.) Visitation with the family will be at 12:00 PM Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at First Cosmopolitan Baptist Church in Raleigh (1515 Cross Link Rd.) and the Homegoing Celebration will begin at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens in Garner.
