Born in West Point, New York, Joanne grew up as an “Army brat” in many locations in the states and overseas. She graduated from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia and received a Master of Education from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Following graduation, Joanne settled in and spent most of her adult life in Northern Virginia. She relocated to Cary in late 2006 and served as Genworth Financial’s Training Director since 2007.
She was the daughter of the late Donald Howard Rehm and Jane Marshall Rehm. Surviving are her son, Nathaniel Grant Johnson of Fairfax, Virginia; sister Mary Jane Pearcy of Raleigh, NC; brothers William and David Rehm of Frederick, Maryland; and beloved nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and other family members. She was married to Michael Gary Johnson of Pinehurst, NC from 1982 to 2001.
A cradle Episcopalian, Joanne was an active member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Raleigh, serving a number of their service ministries. She founded Jo’s Place following her second breast cancer diagnosis as a haven for women facing similar diagnoses and associated challenges.
A funeral service and celebration of life will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Raleigh on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 12 PM, after which the family will receive guests. Joanne’s ashes will be interred at St. Michael’s and scattered at the Carolina coast as a reflection of a lifetime of happy beach memories.
