Winnie Apple Newton, born June 8, 1926 in Rockingham County, NC died of complications from Alzheimer's Disease and pneumonia on the morning of November 30, 2014 at the Clare Bridge Memory Care Facility in Chapel Hill, NC.
Winnie was the widow of the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Newton and is survived by four children: Anita Greene of Mount Airy, NC and her husband Roger Greene; Lee Newton of of Lillington, NC and his wife Cindy Newton; Diana Newton of Carrboro, NC and her husband Barry Groner; and Christine Bush of Mountain View, CA and her spouse Judith Bush. Winnie is also survived by her younger sister Rachel Land of Reidsville, NC. Winnie has six grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and many beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Winnie is remembered for her accomplishments as high school valedictorian, earning her nursing cap through Duke University during the World War II years, as a lover of poetry and talented writer of verse, a preacher's wife, a loving mother, an inspiring Sunday school teacher and deacon, and as a gentle Christian soul possessed of a inner light which shone through in a smile which touched everyone who knew her.
Her memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Raleigh on Salisbury Street on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 2pm. Family will receive visitors in the parlor following the service.
Memorial gifts to First Baptist Church of Raleigh for hunger and the needy are requested in place of flowers.
