Mr. Joe Choplin, age 87, of Burgaw, formerly of Raleigh, passed away Dec. 17, 2014. Mr. Choplin was born March 7, 1927, in Granville County, son of James Walter and Lela Smith Choplin. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 59 years, Clara Choplin; one daughter, Cindy Lanier of Burgaw, and husband Jerome Lanier; a granddaughter, Mandy Leary (Kenny) of Wilmington; a grandson, Adam Lanier of Burgaw; one brother Lewis (Louise) of Wake Forest; two sisters, Billie Lowery (Henry) of Wake Forest and Betty Williams (Keith) of Charlotte, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Mark Choplin; three brothers James Choplin, Marlie Choplin, Elton Choplin and three sisters Cora Bailey, Evelyn Cross, and Madgeline Thompson
Mr. Choplin moved to Burgaw in recent years after spending most of his adult life in Raleigh where he was a lifetime member of the New Hope Baptist Church for close to 50 years. After moving to Burgaw, he attended Westview Methodist Church and joined the Burgaw Baptist Church where he enjoyed the men's Sunday School class.
Mr. Choplin served his country honorably in the navy in 1945. He was a member of the New Hope Volunteer Fire Department for 13 years. After his retirement from the NC Dept. of Corrections in Raleigh he was generous with his time in carrying meals on wheels for over 10 years. Mr. Choplin enjoyed his friends that he shared coffee breaks with in Raleigh for many years before moving to Burgaw. He will always be remembered for his visits and acts of kindness to shut-ins as well as his generous blood donations for many years to the Red Cross.
Funeral services will be held at 1 o’clock, Monday afternoon December 22, 2014 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Historic Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Leonard Cross, Robbie Cross, Kerry Cross, Gene Cross, Sanford Bailey, Adam Lanier, and Kenny Leary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Baptist Church in Raleigh or the Burgaw Baptist church in Burgaw.
Joe's life and love will continue in the memories and hearts of those he left behind.
