A 74-year-old man was found buried in his yard late Thursday night in Burke County, according to the relatives who made the discovery. Officials say an intruder was involved.
Police say the body of John Bailey was found near the corner of Jenkins Road and Rose Carswell Road in Morganton.
Bailey’s sister-in-law, Glenda Clark, said she and another relative went to check on Bailey when they saw blood trailing out of the house and into a freshly dug area.
“I personally think they need the death penalty … somebody do something so cruel. I’m just in shock,” Clark said.

Bailey’s family told police they saw him alive the day before, on Wednesday around 6 p.m.
Authorities say they aren’t sure what the intruder was looking for. Relatives said Bailey had no money and wasn’t on any type of medication that would interest anyone. The family described Bailey as a recluse and someone who would never hurt anyone.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office said details surrounding Bailey’s death are being kept confidential pending further investigation. The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting.
