Robert “Bob” Markunas, age 64, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at his home in Chapel Hill, NC.
Bob was born on April 23, 1950 and adopted by Alex and Mary Markunas of Forest City, PA. He received a full ride to M.I.T. as an undergraduate and was fast-tracked to M.I.T.’s electrical engineering graduate program before even obtaining his bachelor’s degree. He was recruited to RTI in 1982 as a researcher, later becoming the Director of the Center for Semiconductor Research. In 2001 he co-led the spin-off Ziptronix. As an active researcher he received 12 patents and published over 200 papers. In 2005, Bob started his own consulting firm, SoCit, where he worked with U.S. government agencies for the past 9 years.
He will be remembered as a loving husband and father, an avid reader, a do-it-yourself enthusiast, and an exceptionally strong and brilliant man.
Bob is survived by his wife, Carol Gunther-Mohr; two daughters, Stephanie Markunas, and Christina Markunas and her husband Steven Major; and favorite granddog, Orion.
