James Henry Garner, 92 passed away Sunday morning, after a courageous battle against cancer and dementia. He served his country proudly in World War II, which he spoke of so often, with much pride. He retired from NCDOT over 37 years ago with 30 years of dedicated service. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and his family and friends. He was a true gentleman and will be greatly missed by all those that had the pleasure to know him.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 67 years, Ila Hocutt Garner; daughter, Beverly G. Smith of Wendell; granddaughter, Kimberly A. Massey of Garner and niece, Lee Garner Kelly (John) of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Bessie Garner; brother, Robert Garner and sister, Alice Garner.
Funeral service will be held 2 pm Tuesday at Corinth Baptist Church, Hwy 96, Zebulon with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
