Alfred B. “Al” Partin, 91, of Glenaire Retirement Village, Cary, died Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at Transitions LifeCare Hospice Home. He was a deacon of Hayes Barton Baptist Church since 1955 and on February 13, 2005 the church elected him as its first Deacon Emeritus. He taught Sunday school at various levels for more than 45 years. On May 29th, 1974 Al felt God’s call to devote himself to hospital ministry. After study and training in Seminary courses and under the guidance and encouragement by his pastor, Dr. T.L. Cashwell, Al became the first Baptist layman in North Carolina to be certified by the Baptist State Convention as a lay hospital chaplain. He pursued that ministry as an avocation in North Carolina, as well as Myrtle Beach, SC and Sevierville, TN during vacation times at these two locations. Al was a retired personnel officer of Durham Life Insurance Company, a double fellow of the Life Management Institute attained after 7 years of intensive study, President and Treasurer of Wake Foundation and a recipient of the Ralph Whitaker Memorial Award by the Wake County Cancer Society. He was a veteran of World War II, having participated in five campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations and was among the first occupation troops to enter Japan at the end of the war. Al graduated from Hoyles Business College, Raleigh, where he met his wife, Doris. Later he attended Southeastern Baptist Seminary in order to become a chaplain. Al’s ministry to the sick, the sorrowing and the needy will be sorely missed. His love of life and his laughter were shared with all who knew him.
Survivors are his wife, Doris Sherron Partin; one son, Randy A. Partin and wife, Sandra Partin of Raleigh; grandson, Matt Partin and wife, Lauren; granddaughters, Laura Partin Terry and husband, Tim, Morgan Jones Capps and husband, Russ, Callie Jones Wright and husband Jimmy; nephew, James B. Holleman; nieces, Doris Petteway, Mary Upchurch, Joyce Caudle; and six great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate the life of Al will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, December 29, 2014 at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 1:45 pm in the Church Parlor. A private family burial will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park.
