George Horace Moore

Mr. George Horace Moore, formerly of Snow Hill, died Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at the Presbyterian Home of the Hawfields. A native of Lenoir County, he was born, August 31, 1922, the son of Roland and Ava Lanier Moore and youngest sibling of Ruth Moore Cameron and James B. Moore.

The death of his mother while he was a young child led him to the home of Mollie and Charlie Sugg of Snow Hill where he was cared for by Mr. George Duryea. Following the death of Mr. Duryea, at the age of 17, George joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1943, he joined the Army Air Corps and was shot down over Germany in 1944 where he was a POW from July of 1944 until April of 1945.

In January of 1944, he married Edna Harrison, whom he would celebrate 60 years of marriage with prior to her death. Following his discharge from the armed forces, they returned to Snow Hill to build their lives and raise a family. After working with Guarantee Bank in Snow Hill, George took a position as a Rural Mail Carrier with the Snow Hill Post Office, a position he held for thirty years.

Avidly involved in his community, he helped establish the Snow Hill Fire Department, serving as its chief for 18 years, served as the Greene County Fire Marshall, chaired the Selective Services Board during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, and served on the board of what is today Pitt-Greene Electric Membership Corporation. George also became very active in the NC Fireman’s Association where he held various officer positions prior to becoming its Executive Secretary for ten years. George was also a Mason in the Radiance Lodge 132 of Snow Hill.

Upon retirement, Horace and Edna moved to Cape Carteret where he indulged his hobbies of building things, fishing and golfing. Avid travelers, he and Edna loved Hawaii and traveled throughout the United States and Canada. In 1995, they traveled to Germany to his POW site near Barth.

Mr. Moore is survived by his children, Susan Moore Thomas and husband, Dwight of Mebane, Peggy Moore Thomas and husband, Ray of Newport, and Dr. George H. Moore, Jr. and wife, Lynne of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jody Thomas and wife, Sonia of Chapel Hill, Beth Mullikin and husband, Jami of Greenville, SC, John Thomas and wife, Nicole of Hendersonville, TN, Anna Shafer and husband, Jonathen of Chesapeake, VA, Jonathan Thomas and wife, Lauren of Perkasie, PA, Patrick Moore of Southport, Drew Moore of Sana Cruse, CA, and Mary Ashlyn Moore of Vinnings, GA; and 13 great-grandchildren. Additionally, his second wife, Myra Sugg Moore of Norristown, Pennsylvania also survives him.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 17, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service with Reverend Jay Thomas presiding. Interment will follow in the Snow Hill Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday evening at the funeral home and also on Saturday from 1:00 – 1:45 PM prior to the service.
