Dolores Heitt Richardson Joyner of Cary, NC died Jan. 14 at age 99. She was born April 27, 1915 in Goose Lake, Iowa which is in Clinton County. Dolores moved from her family farm when times were hard during World War II. She moved to Chicago and got a job there where she met her first husband, John M. Richardson, Jr. They married in Maquoketa, Iowa on July 4, 1939. She divorced in 1968 and later married Harry Joyner in Greenville, SC. After he died, she moved to Cary, NC to be nearer her children. Dolores is survived by two children: John Maxwell Richardson, III and wife, Linda, of Leland, NC and Phillip Charles Richardson and wife, Kay, of Harrodsburg, KY. Her third son, Jeffrey David Richardson, died at age 4 ½ in 1954 and is buried in Brookfield, MA. She has four grandchildren: John M. Richardson, IV (Jay) of Atlanta, GA; Trent D. Richardson of Raleigh, NC; C. Todd Richardson of Hampstead, NC.; and Dr. Lara Gardner, of Denham Springs, LA. Dolores has seven great-grandchildren: Tessa, Lucy, Reece, Haven, and Syler Richardson and Allison and Avalyn Gardner. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd Lester Heitt and Lillie May Boothby; a sister, Berneice Carlson; and a brother, Dale Heitt.
Dolores was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a wonderful mother, gardener, homemaker and faithful church-goer. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Cary. She obtained her associate business degree at age 55. Her children were proud that she flew solo in an airplane in 1954. Dolores was a charter resident of Glenaire Retirement Community and has lived there for 21 years. Glenaire was “home” to her in every sense of the word. The family would like to express our deep appreciation to all the staff members for their excellent and loving care. A memorial service will be held at the Multi-Purpose Room at 4,000 Glenaire Circle, Cary, NC 27511 on Monday, Jan. 21 at 2 pm. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Greenville, SC.
