George Wesley McKinney, Jr., passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 92, on January 13, 2015.
Dr.McKinney was born on May 27, 1922, in Amigo, WV. He attended Berea College in Kentucky where he met his wife, Lucille Christian McKinney in 1940. They were married Sept. 5, 1941, and celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary with joy last year.
After graduating from Berea, Dr. McKinney completed service in WWII as a Captain in the U.S. Army. At the end of the war, he attended the University of Virginia where he graduated with a Ph.D. in Economics in 1949. He began his career at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond where he wrote The Federal Reserve Discount Window, still actively in use today. In 1960, he became Chief Economist and, later, Senior Vice President of Irving Trust Company in New York City. Dr. McKinney was an active economist who was frequently quoted in the national and international business press. He served as President of the National Association of Business Economists and taught at the Stonier School of Banking. In 1982, Dr. McKinney and his wife returned to Charlottesville when he joined the faculty of the McIntire School of Commerce at U.Va. as the Virginia Bankers Association Professor of Bank Management.
After retiring from U.Va., Dr. McKinney and his wife moved to Fearrington Village and then to Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill, NC.
A multi-talented man who began life on a small family farm, Dr. McKinney was an accomplished, self-taught pianist who loved life and enjoyed spending time with friends, his extended family, and especially his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife , Lucille, 3 loving children: George W. McKinney III and his wife, Marie, of Santa Rosa, CA; Mary McKinney Schweitzer, preceded in death by her husband, Robert, of Newark, DE and Incline Village, CA; Ruth Ann McKinney and her husband, Ray West, of Chapel Hill; 8 grandchildren: Jeanne McKinney (Gary Held) of San Francisco, CA; Susan McKinney Oliver (Dave) of Oak Ridge, TN; Eric Schweitzer (Traci) of Davie, FL; Carolyn Schweitzer (Richard Ceranek) of Newark, DE; Bret McKinney Gerbe of Austin, TX; Lynda Christian Gerbe (Deon Chop McCormick) of Durham, NC; Matthew West (Brandi) of Charleston, SC; Ashlie West of Durham, NC; and 6 great grandchildren: Jamison Wesley Gluyas, Ryan Wilson, Elijah Oliver, and John Oliver of Oak Ridge, TN, and Kendall Schweitzer and Conner Schweitzer of Davie, FL.
