Audrey G. Schmidt

Audrey Gombert Schmidt died on January 15, 2015. Audrey was born on April 6, 1930 in Perkasie, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Samuel and Vivian Gombert. She is survived by her loving husband, Warren, sons Jeffrey, Stephen and Daniel; Stephen’s wife Colleen and grandchildren Samantha and Garrett. Preceding her in death were her parents, sister Evelyn and brother Samuel, Jr.

Audrey graduated from Hawley High School in Pennsylvania and attended Mansfield State Teachers College, University of Maryland, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She was employed as a cartographic technician at the Central Intelligence Agency, where she met her future husband, Warren. Married in 1954, they lived in London from 1956 to 1958 where she worked in the American Embassy and enjoyed travelling through Europe. Upon return to the US, her three wonderful sons were born in 1959, 1960 and 1962. She next worked in the Office of International Geology at the US Geological Survey until retiring in 1992. In 1989-1990 she volunteered with the International Executive Service Corps in Central America, where she and Warren designed a road map to promote tourism in Costa Rica.

Audrey enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, bridge, gardening, traveling, cooking, gourmet club, art, the Carolina Hurricanes, and Roads Scholar programs. She and Warren were members of the Cary Lions Club and the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Cary.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held February 7.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, the Cary Lions Club Vision Fund and Transitions HospiceCare of Raleigh.
