Thelma Edge Doares, 84, formerly of Lumberton, died Thursday, January 15, 2015, at WakeMed Cary Hospital, of complications from a recent illness. She was born in Clarendon, Columbus Co., NC, daughter of the late Bertha Harrelson Edge and Charles Marion Edge, and was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Franklin Doares, and by three sisters: Lila E. Griffin, Esta E. Hudgins, and Ora Lee Grimsley. Mrs. Doares was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, Lumberton, where a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, The Rev. David Ruth officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
Mrs. Doares completed training as a registered nurse in Lumberton in 1951 and worked for a time as an office nurse before changing careers to teach kindergarten at First Presbyterian Church and later at Janie C. Hargrave and Tanglewood elementary schools in Lumberton.
Mrs. Doares is survived by her children Robert F. Doares, Jr., of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Steven H. Doares and his wife Lesli M.W. Doares of Holly Springs; a brother Charles M. Edge, Jr., of Loris, South Carolina; and grandchildren Andrew Doares, of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Jenna Doares, of Boone. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1006 N. Elm Street, Lumberton, NC 28358.
