Jane Bruce Shingleton, age 88, commenced her inseparable union with God and her much beloved husband on January 19, 2015. Jane was born on August 26, 1926 in Palatka, Florida. Her family moved to Jasper, Florida in [x], and returned to Palatka in 1942, where she graduated from Putnam County High School in 1944.
Jane attended and graduated from Duke University in 1948, majoring in chemistry. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. Jane was one of seven students inducted into the secret society know as the White Duchy, reportedly the highest honorary academic recognition on East Campus. Other notable accomplishments of Jane’s college career include serving as President of Panhellenic Council, Vice-President of the Freshman Y Council, and a member of the synchronized swim team. After graduation from Duke, Jane worked in the laboratory of Dr. William Kempner at Duke Medical Center. During her work there she met her future husband, Dr. William Shingleton. They married on August 4, 1949. They had five children: William Bruce, Arthur Bradley, Catherine Jane, Betty Merriman and Susan Norris. Jane and Bill lived in Durham until 2005, when they moved to the Cedars of Chapel Hill.
Jane was an active member in her community, as evidenced by her involvement with various organizations including the Junior League of Durham, Daughters of the American Revolution, Triangle Community Foundation and Hope Valley Country Club. She was especially active as an advocate of the Duke Cancer Institute (DCI), where she served as an honorary member of the Board of Advisors, and Emeritus Member of the DCI Citizens Advisory Council. In 1963, Jane became a founding member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, which she faithfully attended over the years.
Jane was also a member of Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville, NC where she spent many enjoyable summers. In addition to being an avid tennis player, she also enjoyed golf and croquet with her friends. Jane was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Katherine Bruce, her husband Dr. William Warner Shingleton, her sister Betty Bruce Jones, and infant grandson William Michael Shingleton. She is survived by: her sons William Bruce Shingleton (Marcia) of Augusta, GA, and Arthur Bradley Shingleton (Sherburne Laughlin) of Bethesda, MD; her daughters Catherine Shingleton Branch (Brad) of Atlanta, GA, Betty Shingleton Franklin of Morrisville, NC, and Susan Shingleton Sutcliff (Michael) of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren: Robley Bruce Shingleton, Margaret Merriman Shingleton, Mary Elizabeth Shingleton, William Wiley Shingleton, Matthias Bernhardt Shingleton, William Warner Branch, Julia Catherine Branch, Sarah Elizabeth Branch, Oliver Douglas Branch, Sarah Catherine Franklin, Richard Carter Franklin, Catherine Harper Sutcliff, and Lindsay Jane Sutcliff. Jane also leaves behind a niece, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends made over the years.

A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Durham, NC on Friday, January 23 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the Shingleton family requests memorial gifts be directed to the jane Bruce Shingleton Endowment for Breast cancer Research, 710 West Main Street, Suite 200, Durham, NC 27701.
