Bonnie Herje, 81, of Raleigh died on January 20, 2015. She was born in Jamesville, NC and graduated from Jamesville High School in 1951. One of her favorite HS activities was playing basketball. When a shortage of uniforms threatened to keep Bonnie off the team, one of her many dear sisters made a uniform for her.
Bonnie received her nurses training at Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing and completed the William and Mary College Extension in Norfolk, Virginia (1951-54). In addition to her studies, Bonnie served as Captain of the nurses basketball team. In the early years of her career, she was employed at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, Queens Hospital in Honolulu, HI, and the Plymouth Clinic in Plymouth, NC. In 1959, Bonnie moved to Chapel Hill and accepted a Pediatric Staff Nurse position at The North Carolina Memorial Hospital. Bonnie was later promoted to Head Nurse, where she managed her nursing staff and shared her gifts of warmth and caring for seriously ill children and their families for over 14 years. After moving to Raleigh in 1977, Bonnie worked at a local Pediatric office for several years before accepting a position at the Wake County Alcoholism Treatment Center where she worked a staff nurse and later as Director of Nursing until her retirement in 1989.
Bonnie was predeceased by her first husband Wayne Beard (1972), second husband Sid Herje (2013), and her eldest daughter Vi Cheek (2009). Bonnie is survived by her daughter Paige Wallington (Chuck) of Raleigh, grandchildren Wayne Cheek (Elaina) of Hillsborough and Nicholas Cheek (Gina) of Holly Springs, and stepdaughters Linda White (Curt) of Fuquay-Varina, Nancy Herje of Raleigh, and Jerri Stockland (Wayne) of Bella Vista, AR, three additional grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many friends. Bonnie dearly loved her sisters, brother, nieces, nephews, and shared many wonderful adventures with her sisters Red, Nell, Celia, Peggy, Viola, Linda, Wanda, and Fran. Bonnie was predeceased by her sisters Red and Nell, and her brother, Bubba.
A memorial service to celebrate Bonnie’s life will be held on Friday, January 23rd at 1pm at Jamesville Methodist Church in Jamesville NC with burial to follow.
