Dr. Joseph Flake Steelman, 92, passed away Wednesday January 21, 2015.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday at 3:30 pm in Pinewood Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 on Sunday at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Dr. Steelman was born in Moravian Falls, NC to the late Joseph and Gertrude Edmisten Steelman. He was a graduate of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his Masters and PHD in History and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. A history professor for over 40 years, he taught at the University of North Carolina, Texas A & M, State University of New York at Courtland and East Carolina University where he also was a graduate director.

A prolific award winning author, he was a former president of the North Carolina Literary and Historical Society. With his wife, also a history professor, he was awarded the Christopher Crittenden Lifetime Achievement Award. He was the 2006 recipient of the North Caroliniana Society Award. Dr. Steelman served in the United States Army during WWII in the European Theater.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Dr. Lala Steelman; son, Joseph F. Steelman, Jr. and brothers, Hoke and Britt Steelman.
He is survived by his: daughter, Dr. Lala Carr Steelman, her husband, Dr. Carl Ek, granddaughter, Lala Christina Ek, all of Columbia, SC, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Jeanette Steelman, of Hilton Head Island, SC.
