Lucy Jefferson Tyson

Lucy Blackwood Jefferson Tyson, died Saturday, January 31, 2015 in Smithfield, NC. She was born June 13, 1936 in Chapel Hill, NC. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Nonie Blackwood; her husband, Clyde B. Jefferson; her brother, D.A. “Buck” Blackwood of Chapel Hill, NC; sisters, Eula B. Williams of Chapel Hill, NC. She was also preceded in death by her older sister Nannie B. Phillips on January 25, 2015. In 2005, Lucy married Reverend Bobby Tyson, Sr. who has also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters; Karen Jefferson Cates, Greensboro, NC; Bonnie Jefferson Talton (husband Fred Talton,) Smithfield, NC. Five grandchildren; Tyler Cates (wife Liz), Atlanta, GA; Jackson Cates, Carlsbad, NM; Megan Cates, Raleigh, NC; Brittany Talton, Haley Talton, Smithfield, NC. Surviving is also her brother Kenon R. Blackwood (wife Nancy,) Chapel Hill, NC; Brother-in-law, Bernie Williams, Sr.; Sister-in-law, Jewel Blackwood, Chapel Hill, NC; Sister-in-law, Joyce Jefferson Gossett, Charlotte, NC and many special relatives, nieces and nephews.

Lucy was born, educated and lived most of her life in Chapel Hill. She was a graduate of Chapel Hill High School, attended Campbell University and UNC-Chapel Hill. She was a successful Real Estate Broker representing the Chapel Hill and Triangle area for over 30 years. Lucy was known for her generosity with her time and resources. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and loving friend. She will always be remembered for her grace, love of life and beautiful smile.

A celebration of her life will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield, NC on Saturday morning, February 7th at Eleven o’clock. The family will receive visitors after the service at Centenary UMC as well as at the burial service to be held at 3:30 that afternoon at Mt. Carmel-Sparrow Cemetery in Chapel Hill. Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Centenary United Methodist Church or to SECU Hospice House, Smithfield, NC.
