Moms get to celebrate all birthdays

From the moment he woke up last Monday until he finally fell asleep, Trevor had a constant smile on his face.

And I believe he uttered the phrase “It’s my birthday” at least 100 times that day, just in case anyone could possibly forget. He had been looking forward to his 9th birthday since a few days after he turned 8 and was determined to make the best use of every moment.

As I have gotten older, the magic of my own birthday has faded, and my kids’ birthdays have become two of my favorite days of the year. I love seeing their faces when they open their presents and watching them blow out their candles, but it goes deeper than that. My children’s birthdays aren’t just celebrations of the days they were born, but also for me, they are celebrations of when I became their mom.

On their birthdays, I get to celebrate two of the greatest moments of my life – when I held my babies in my arms for the first time. I think about how I have grown from a clueless first-time mom to a parent who knows what she is doing at least some of the time. And how being a mom is by far the most wonderful and challenging thing that I will ever do in my life.

I hope that you had a wonderful birthday, Trevor. I love you more than you will ever know and am so glad I am your mom.
