Here it is the last day of September and the '72 Dolphins already have the champagne on ice.
Three weeks into the NFL season and only three unbeatens remain.
One is Buffalo. One is Detroit. Really, look it up.
The other is Green Bay.
On the other hand, five teams still haven't won a game this season. That group includes the franchise claiming to be the Miami Dolphins, what's left of Peyton's Place in Indianapolis, Minnesota, St. Louis and - early leaders in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes - the Kansas City Chiefs.
What does it all mean?
That's why we have October.
CAROLINA at CHICAGO: This one's special for Panthers coach Ron Rivera and his team knows it. Panthers 26, Bears 21.
BUFFALO at CINCINNATI: Not to throw ketchup on your plate of Buffalo wings, but just because the Bills are 3-0 and the freshest face this side of Zooey Deschanel doesn't mean their long-suffering fans should be making playoff plans.
It's a nice thought - like those three days of summer Buffalo gets - but that's all it is right now. Here's another step in that direction. Bills 28, Bengals 21.
TENNESEE at CLEVELAND: Maybe it's just me and flashbacks to the days of Frank Ryan and Jim Brown, but Cleveland's brown jerseys are among my favorites in the NFL.
Like I said, maybe it's just me. Browns 30, Titans 20.
PITTSBURGH at HOUSTON: This is the kind of game really good Pittsburgh teams win. Texans 24, Steelers 16.
DETROIT at DALLAS: The Lions are going to lose eventually. Here comes eventually. Cowboys 29, Lions 20.
SAN FRANCISCO at PHILADELPHIA: Rather than fly home after their victory in Cincinnati then have to turn around and pick up even more frequent flier points by going back to Philly, the 49ers decided to spend this week in Boardman, Ohio, also known as a suburb of Youngstown.
Researchers (that's what I call people who find this stuff out on the internet so I don't have to look it up) point out that Boardman, Ohio, is home to the original Arby's. Now it makes sense. Eagles 21, 49ers 17.
WASHINGTON at ST. LOUIS: Good thing for the Rams that the city has been more concerned with the Cardinals' playoff push and the future of Albert Pujols than with what Sam Bradford and his mates have been up to recently.
Maybe the turnaround starts here. Rams 38, Redskins 24.
NEW ORLEANS at JACKSONVILLE: Next week, John Kasay will return to kick against the Panthers. Before that, he'll get a workout against Jack Del Rio's team. Saints 37, Jaguars 24.
MINNESOTA at KANSAS CITY: The who cares game of the week. Chiefs 27, Vikings 17.
NEW YORK GIANTS at ARIZONA: If this one gets you excited, good for you.
Cardinals 28, Giants 24.
ATLANTA at SEATTLE: If the NFL had a Doubt Division, the Falcons may be the leaders. For a team that some have predicted will win the Super Bowl, they're having a hard time getting started. Still believing but ... Falcons 24, Seahawks 20.
DENVER at GREEN BAY: The Packers are the best team in the NFL. The Broncos aren't even the best team in their division. How's that for detailed evaluation? Packers 33, Broncos 17.
NEW ENGLAND at OAKLAND: Let's sing a quick chorus of "Sweet Caroline" to remind Red Sox fans of what they're missing now that the baseball playoffs have begun. Ready, here we go ... "Where it began ..." You know the rest.
Patriots 27, Raiders 23.
MIAMI at SAN DIEGO: They're looking at a possible television blackout in Chargerville this weekend because the game may not sell out.
Not a good thing when the neighbors in Los Angeles are looking for a team to put in the stadium they want to build there. Chargers 34, Dolphins 17.
NEW YORK JETS at BALTIMORE: Time for Rex Ryan's guys to deliver a big win. Jets 23, Ravens 17.
INDIANAPOLIS at TAMPA BAY: Now that Colts President Robert Irsay has made it clear that quarterback Peyton Manning won't return this season - unless he does return - the Horseshoes are in the market for another quarterback since Kerry Collins has suffered the double indignity of not being effective and getting his bell rung in the process.
They settled on Dan Orlovsky. Did they not have Brett Favre's number? Bucs 32, Colts 12.
Last week: 12-4
