With a list of former champions that includes some of the most memorable names in the state’s golf history, the 46th annual Toshiba North Carolina Open begins Tuesday at the Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis.
The 54-hole event has a field of more than 150 professionals and amateurs from the area, led by defending champion Steve Isley of Oak Island.
Other top contenders include 2009 Carolinas PGA player of the year Curt Sanders from Wilmington; 2010 Carolinas Open winner Ivan Schronce of Wilmington and Pinehurst’s Kelly Mitchum, who has won every major Carolinas PGA title except the North Carolina Open.
The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties for Thursday’s final round at the Davis Love III-designed course.
