Malcolm Bruce MacLeod, Jr., 94, of Smithfield, NC died February 14, 2015 at Smithfield Manor Nursing Home following a brief period of declining health. Born in Aberdeen, SD on September 7, 1920 to Malcolm Bruce and Shirley Moore MacLeod, he was a resident of Smithfield for 55 years. Mac grew up in St. Paul, MN. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1943 with a BS degree in economics. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII as company clerk of the 170th Engineer (C) Battalion in the South Pacific.
In 1948, Mac went to work for National Cash Register. As a senior salesman, he was assigned a new territory in eastern NC and moved to Greenville in 1953 where he was active in the Lions Club and Immanuel Baptist Church. In 1958, Mac went to work for First Citizens Bank in Smithfield. He managed the branch operations and purchasing departments and also served as security officer. He retired from First Citizens as a senior vice president in 1990.
Mac was an energetic man who loved life and believed in giving back to his community. His natural curiosity and love of knowledge and enjoyment of reading were hallmarks of his life. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, was the first president of the Friends of the Library, and was active in the Kiwanis club for many years. He was a founding commissioner and treasurer of the West Smithfield Sanitary District.
Mac and his wife, Betty, were active members of Sharon Baptist Church where he was a life time deacon, taught the Men’s Sunday School class, and served in many other areas of the church. He also served the Truck Stop Ministry, teaching a Bible lesson once a month. During his retirement, Mac developed a ministry to local assisted living and nursing homes. He would visit in the homes weekly with his dog, Shiloh, and enjoyed presenting monthly programs of jokes and stories. Mac was a long time member of the County Club of Johnston County Country where he enjoyed playing golf up to the age of 90.
Mac was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Betty Lanier MacLeod, and grandson, Robert I. (Bo) Thompson. He is survived by his children, Bruce H. MacLeod and wife, Joy, of Raleigh, and their three children, Brandon, Rob, and David; daughter Beth M. Thompson and husband, Tommy, of Greenville, NC, and daughter Kathy M. Coats and husband, Mike, of Tampa Florida, and their children Jennifer and Ashley, and one great grandson, Dylan.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, February 19th from 6PM to 8PM at Parrish Funeral Home, Selma, NC. The funeral service will be held Friday, February 20th at 11AM at Sharon Baptist Church, Smithfield with burial following in Knollwood Memorial Park.
