Sarah Genevieve Ellis Bell passed away at her home on Saturday, February 21, 2015, surrounded by her family.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Horne Memorial Methodist Church with Reverend Jerry Smith and Reverend Ross Carter officiating.
A native of Clayton, North Carolina, Genevieve was born on March 1, 1922. She attended Clayton High School and graduated from Louisburg College, class of 1941.
After graduating from Louisburg College, she began working for the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. Genevieve also worked for the Raleigh Merchants Bureau and the Clayton Merchants Association. In 1973 she became the administrative assistant at Clayton Primary School and served in this capacity for many years. Genevieve was also an active, life-long member of Horne Memorial Methodist Church in Clayton.
She loved gardening and spent many happy hours outdoors in her yard. Her yard is filled with many flowers, bushes, trees, and plants which she planted over the years with her loyal friend Haywood. The plants she has shared now grace the yard of many friends and acquaintances. Many people still stop to look at her beautiful flowers.
Genevieve was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, sister, aunt, and daughter. Throughout her life, there were many times when she graciously served as the caregiver for many of her loved ones. Her Sunday lunches are still remembered by many extended family members.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband of sixty one years, David (Dick) Bennett Bell. She was also preceded by her parents Emma and Ernest Ellis; sisters, Emma Lucille Hoggard, Elgic Irene Ellis, Beatrice E. Clement, Ernest Ruth Pruden, and Mary Virginia Metscher; brothers, Elton Willard “Bo” Ellis and Ernest Cecil “Bos” Ellis.
She is survived by her sons, Charles Christopher Bell and wife, Meryl of Raleigh, NC; and David Bennett Bell, Jr. and wife, Cathy of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Sarah and Christopher Bell of Wilmington, NC; Amy Bell Stritzel and husband, Lawrence of Garner, NC, and Ashley Bell Jenkins and husband, Griff of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren, Adeline and Finley Stritzel, and Hayes Jenkins; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at McLaurin Funeral Home.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the loving care and friendship given to Genevieve over the past few years by Sue Coats, Lila Manley, Emma Moore, and Lynette Ruffin.
