Venitah Sanders, 86, died peacefully in the presence of her family on February 21, 2015 at the Teresian House in Albany, NY; a public visitation with the family was held on February 23, 2015 in their chapel.
Venitah was born and raised in her beloved home town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; daughter of Dolly Sanders and Wiley Britton Sanders. Nita graduated from the University of North Carolina, after performing in several plays and theater productions including The Lost Colony. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and sang in the church choir for many years. She maintained her love of music and dance her whole life, and performed in a senior dance troop in her 60’s. Venitah’s favorite place to vacation was Holden Beach NC, where her parents, siblings, cousins, and all the many children thereof have continued to gather for annual family reunions for over 80 years.
Nita was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She married Robert Barbour of Raleigh, NC and raised her family in cities as varied as Asheville, N.C.; Little Rock, Arkansas; Birmingham, Alabama; and Neptune Beach, Florida. She is survived by her three children, Neil Barbour of Jacksonville Beach, FL; Marcy Fiacco of Castleton, NY; and Wiley Barbour of Chapel Hill, NC. Her memory will be cherished by her five grandchildren, Dean, Laura, Robert, (children of Marcy and Angelo Fiacco) Everett and Wyatt (children of Wiley and Lynda Barbour). She will be missed by her brother, Britton Sanders, extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the University Presbyterian Church, 209 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC. Final internment will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Venitah will be accepted for the Teresian House Foundation, 200 Washington Avenue Extension, Albany, NY 12203.
