Mozelle Coats Ellis of Smithfield passed peacefully into the night early on the morning of March 25, 2015; she was 96. She is the widow of the late Ralph C. Ellis also of Smithfield. Mozelle was truly an amazing lady. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and ability to flash that lovely smile even while enduring numerous painful ailments late in her life. During her professional career while working at the Smithfield Hog Market she became the highest paid accountant male or female in Smithfield at a time when the majority of women stayed at home raising a family, yet she always found time to cook, clean and care for her husband and two children. When the hog market closed she went on to work at the Jerold Corporation, and completed her career working for the Town of Smithfield Community Development Department.
She is survived by her son, R.J. Ellis and his wife Debby of Chapel Hill, her daughter Katherine F. Ellis of Cary, and a sister, Betty C. Lee of Wilson's Mills.
A public viewing is scheduled for this Saturday March 28 at Underwood Funeral Home in Smithfield from 6-8pm. A memorial service will be held in her honor at 3:00 PM this Sunday March 29 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Smithfield where she was a member. Burial will take place immediately following the service in the Riverside Cemetery. Condolences may be made to the family at www.underwoodfh.com.
