Thrift William Tyson, Jr., passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4 at Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh. He was born to Thrift, Sr. and Mozelle Tyson on October 9, 1931 and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. Thrift graduated from Randolph Macon College. He also received masters degrees in Education and Health Administration. Thrift was married to Vernon (“Verne”) Oliver Tyson for 50 years.
Family and friends will remember Thrift as a person who dedicated his life to helping others, especially those less fortunate than he. His 32 year career with the American Cancer Society allowed him to serve others through fund raising and public awareness. Upon his retirement, he served by teaching English to immigrants. His example of serving people of all cultures and walks of life was passed on to his children and grandchildren and is still influencing them today.
Thrift was preceded in death by his wife Verne. He is survived by two daughters, Becky (Will) Joslin, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Susan (Lee) Kembel, of Grand Junction, Colorado; five grandchildren, Joel, Lydia and Andrew Joslin, and Stacey and Julie Kembel; and a sister, Ora Lee Pitts, of Richmond, Virginia.
A memorial service will take place in the auditorium of Springmoor Retirement Community at 1500 Sawmill Drive in Raleigh on Friday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m.
