Joseph Robert Barton, 80, of Cleveland, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at his home.
Born September 4, 1934 in Ogdensburg, NY, he was the son of the late George Washington Barton and Agnes Ierlan Barton.
Mr. Barton graduated from St. Lawrence State Hospital’s School of Nursing in 1955 as a Registered Nurse and State University of NY, Plattsburgh in 1963 with a BS in Teacher Education. He was a Captain in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps 1956-58 and was honorably discharged from the Air Reserve in 1965.
He was Director of Nursing in Bristol, CT, then Vice President of Patient Services at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC from 1973-94. He retired to Salisbury, NC in 1996.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Buckley Barton on April 27, 2011 and his brothers, Donald and Roger Barton.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Brian Barton and wife Jennifer of Cleveland, NC, Marcia Hatcher of Wallace, NC, Sheilah Zimpel and husband David of Denver, NC, nine grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was beloved by all.
The family will receive friends from 3-5 PM Sunday (Apr. 19) at Summersett Funeral Home with Closing Prayers at 5 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 11 AM – Mon (Apr. 20) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. John Eckert, officiating. Interment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
