James Samuel Smith ended his journey on April 13, 2015 at Transitions LifeCare.
Born in Richmond, VA, son of James S. Smith, Sr. and Mary Hines Smith. A graduate of John Marshall High School and the University of Virginia School of Engineering (1957), his career included IBM, GE and ITT.
Jim enjoyed fishing, travel, especially summers in Maine, sports events, gardening and his “Splash Club” friends at Cary’s Rex Wellness Center.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ethel Shumaker Smith, Cary; daughters Karen Dolan (Tom), Gordonsville, VA and Cindy Holeman (Rob), Raleigh; grandchildren, Chris Dolan (Carrie), Williamsburg, VA; Laura Dolan, Philadelphia, PA; and Nicholas Holeman, Raleigh; great grandson, Carter Dolan, Williamsburg, VA; and brother-in-law, Cecil C. Shumaker, Woodbridge, VA.

The family will welcome friends to the Smith home in Cary on Friday, April 17, 5-8 p.m.
A private family service will take place in Richmond, VA.
