Mr. Royal Thomas Mather, 96, beloved by family and friends, died peacefully at his home on April 2, 2015.
Mr. Mather was born in Mountain View, NJ, to the late Rose Cranston and Rev. Howard Ellsworth Mather.
After his 1941 graduation from Cornell University, he began his life-long career with The Traveler’s Insurance Co. in NYC; and on May 23, 1942, married his childhood sweetheart, Marjorie Leona Gibson, in Brooklyn.
From 1943 to 1945, Mr. Mather served in the European Theater with the US Army, 35th Infantry Division, 219th Field Artillery Battalion, seeing combat in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.

Mr. Mather was preceded in death by Marjorie, his wife of 63 years; an infant daughter Lynne; his brother Charles W. Mather; and his brothers-in-law, William R. Stahley and Howard Gibson.
He is survived by his daughter Christine and grandchildren Matthew and Emma of Raleigh; his brother Richard Mather of NY; his sisters-in-law Gloria Stahley of NC, and Thelma Mather of MA; and their families.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Transitions Life Care/Hospice 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
