Ed Harris Reveals That 'Dutton Ranch' Replaced His 'Westworld' Cowboy Hat
Known for incredible roles ranging from The Truman Show to Pollack to The Abyss, it's possible and reasonable that many modern TV audiences know actor Ed Harris best for his unforgettable performance in HBO's Westworld, in which he played "the Man in Black" AKA William. So, now, in 2026, as Ed Harris joins the latest Yellowstone spinoff,Dutton Ranch, it makes sense that he would already have all of his cowboy gear ready to go, right?
Sadly, no. As Harris revealed to Men's Journal in an interview ahead of the launch of Dutton Ranch, his famous black cowboy hat from Westworld met with a very, very tragic fate. "I did keep my hat from Westworld. But it burned up." Harris says, in reference to the Palisade Fire of 2025, in which the actor lost his home. "All my Western stuff burned up. My boots, hats, holsters, everything."
But the new gig on Dutton Ranch, in which Harris plays Everett McKinney, seems to have helped Harris get back on his cowboy game.
In Episode 3, "Act of God Business," we see Everett in some actual cowboy gear for the first time. Because the character is a veteran and a veterinarian, in most scenes, he's wearing a baseball cap honoring his time with the Navy Seawolves. But, in this episode, during the funeral of Ellis Logan, Everett is decked out in boots and a black cowboy hat. This isn't exactly like his Westworld custom hat, but it's still good to see him back in a hat like this.
"I got a new black hat, which is okay," Harris says. "I got a couple of new pairs of boots, and some of that came out of working on the Dutton Ranch situation."
Episode 3 also reveals that the kindly Everett has a hidden past with Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), suggesting that maybe the villainous rancher isn't as one-dimensional as she might seem. Either way, if we're lucky, we'll get to see Harris rocking more of his western gear as the season gallops on.
