Major's Supper and Social in Valdese closes Wednesday

The owners of an Asian fusion restaurant open less than a year in Valdese have decided to close the eatery, effective immediately.

Major's Supper and Social announced its closing on its Facebook page Wednesday morning. The restaurant, at 149 W. Main St., opened in August and operated Thursdays through Mondays.

The closing is immediate, co-owner Courtney Morse told The News Herald on Wednesday. She said she and her partner Stephen Yorsz were not happy to have to close, but it was the responsible decision for them to make.

The original benefit to the project was that it was a shared space with shared overhead, Morse said.

Mountain Burrito had a location in the building when Major's moved in to share the space.

Morse said Mountain Burrito decided to not come back after Christmas, she said.

Major's Supper and Social had worked out a lease agreement with the building owner, and Morse said they had identified and developed an agreement with a daytime partner who was going to run a lunch business in the space.

"We had talked to several people trying to find a suitable partner in the space, and we had found one and felt confident in pursuing a lease," Morse said, "but that family had a crisis and they had to change their plan, and we found that out yesterday."

She and Yorsz knew pretty immediately that it would not be responsible to the business or their families if they took the risk of the full lease, given the current market, Morse said.

Morse said their lease would have started this week, so it was important for them to inform the landlord and their customers and just be clear immediately.

"We're very proud of the restaurant that we built," Morse said. "We had a wonderful, loyal customer base, a lot of people from Valdese, a lot of people from Hickory and Morganton that came regularly. But I think the amount of time it would have taken to build the volume of clientele that we needed, we just didn't have that lead time. And we needed a shared space."

Morse said they have some food inventory left and plan to throw a celebratory kind of last supper party within the next two weeks. It will be a time for them to spend a moment with many of people who supported them and end on a happy note, she said.

She said they may do some pop-ups and supper clubs, so they plan to keep their social media pages active and see what manifests.
