Fades into the background
The T-shirt, light cargo pants and worn sneakers are functional but look more like a college-guy outfit than one for a business owner. The hat covers his face and shaggy haircut. This look would work fine when Ron is running errands or on days when he does home inspections, which can involve dirty work, like crawling under houses. But his wife wants a better business casual look for her "wonderfully handsome" husband.
Makes a statement
A sleek haircut with a modern shape suits Ron's face and frame, while a bright, blue half-zip Ron Norman wool sweater ($49) over a dark plaid Polo Ralph Lauren golf shirt ($29) makes the most of his chest and torso. Long, lean, dark-denim Diesel Industry Zatiny jeans ($140) and leg-lengthening Calvin Klein brown suede loafers ($90) add to his stature. Good materials and tailoring push at the price of these pieces, but less expensive pieces in similar shapes and colors would look good, too.

The dark denim jeans get a dressier look paired with a Hickey Freeman brown tweed jacket with subtle blue threads ($716), Polo Ralph Lauren wool sweater ($49) and leather belt ($85). In this, Ron could meet clients or friends for a social event, then take his wife, Abby (who nominated him for this makeover), out on a date. Gray wool slacks and a shirt and tie would dress up the jacket when Ron's job takes him to court.
