Barbara Colgan’s style rut was defined by jeans, T-shirts and functional shoes. Working remotely as an accountant for a New Jersey leasing company, she doesn’t have to dress well for work but this Cary wife and mom of two grown kids wants to do better. “I’ve tried to create a style for myself but I’m unable to pull together all the right pieces,” Colgan said. “I’d love to get your help.” I answered the call with stylish pieces perfect for a busy professional.
Before: Her jeans, sweater and sneaker combo is functional, but it’s not making the stylish statement Colgan aspires to. Comfort and cuteness can co-exist. Modern sneakers would be just as comfortable, and a warmer hair color would be more flattering.
After: Wanda Tripp gave Colgan a sleeker haircut that frames her face and golden highlights that harmonize with her skin color. LaToya Simms added false eyelashes and eyeshadows in neutral colors spotlight her eyes, while contouring and highlighting techniques bring out her cheekbones. A date-night outfit showcases Colgan’s figure. The navy Ric Rac dress by KOKOON is complemented by Ivanka Trump ankle strap pumps , and a scarf, necklace and ring from Accessories by Ann O’Neal in coordinating shades of blue. The KOKOON Featherweight Cardigan, Per Suede tank, NYDJ skinnies and Taos sandals are a nicer work uniform. Kristen’s Place clutch, Button Briolette necklace and leather bracelet cuff finish the look.
The reaction: Kudos to Wanda Tripp and LaToya Simms for providing a free hair and makeup session that accentuated Colgan’s natural beauty. Colgan bought two dresses, the cardigan, several pieces of jewelry and might return for shoes. “There’s definitely more to the makeover than I had originally anticipated, but it’s been a great learning experience,” she said.
