Headbands of Hope founder a finalist in Women’s Health magazine contest

Raleigh designer and entrepreneur Jess Ekstrom, founder of Headbands of Hope, is among the finalists for Women’s Health magazine’s Game Changers competition. The contest honors women living healthy lifestyles while making a difference in their communities and the world.

Ekstrom founded Headbands of Hope in 2012 after an internship with the Make-a-Wish Foundation introduced her to the struggles of children fighting cancer. Ekstrom designed her headbands as a fun accessory to lift the spirits of kids who’ve lost their hair during treatments. For every headband sold, the company donates a headband to a child or teen dealing with hair loss.

Fashionable First Friday

Downtown Raleigh’s First Friday celebration is just around the corner, and there are several fashionable events on the docket this month.

Dress for Success sales

With so many donations coming in, Dress for Success Triangle NC sometimes accumulates a surplus of women’s clothing. That overabundance is the bargain shopper’s gain as the organization holds two buy-one-get-one-free sales in Raleigh and Durham.

The Raleigh sales are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 2 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 3 at 1812 Tillery Place. In Durham, the sales are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 9 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 10 at Northgate Mall.

Shoppers will find new and gently used women’s clothing, shoes, handbags and other accessories. Proceeds from the sales will benefit Dress for Success programs to assist local women in need. To learn more, visit
