But the restaurant — Carrburritos — isn’t going far.
The restaurant is currently located at 711 W. Rosemary St. It will remain open during the transition to the new location, 0.3 miles away at Carr Mill Mall, at 200 N. Greensboro St.
Carrburritos will move into the former Grata Cafe space, which is most known for housing Elmo’s Diner. The all-day breakfast restaurant was a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic, shutting down for good in 2020 (the original Durham location of Elmo’s is still open).
Owner Rae Mosher, daughter of Carrburritos founders Bill and Gail Fairbanks, announced the decision to move the restaurant Tuesday, March 31, on “This Morning with Aaron Keck” on 97.9 The Hill, Chapelboro reported. The radio station and digital publication are owned by Chapel Hill Media Group.
Mosher is targeting an opening at the new location in late summer, around early August, she said on the radio show.
Mosher told Keck the larger space will be able to accommodate the restaurant’s growing catering business, while still serving the menu Carrburritos is known for. The move will also allow Carrburritos to offer a full bar and make it easier for customers to access the restaurant, in terms of parking.
At Carr Mill Mall, Carrburritos will join retailers and restaurants including Golden Fig Books, Autostrada, Tandem and Ali Cat Toys.
Carrburritos menu
Carrburritos offers a range of burritos stuffed with beans, cheese, lettuce, salsa and meats, ranging in price from around $4-$14, depending on size and fillings.
The restaurant also serves tacos ($4-$11), tostadas ($8-$14), quesadillas ($4-$7) and nachos ($9).
Meals can be washed down with beverages including beer and margaritas, plus nonalcoholic options.
30 years of Carrburritos
The restaurant was established in 1997 and has been run by Mosher since 2017. The Fairbanks family had moved from Oakland, California, to Chapel Hill five years earlier, bringing California-style burritos with them.
In 2013, Carrburritos expanded to Davidson, and it opened a new location at Boxyard RTP in 2021. Now, only the Carrboro and Davidson locations remain, after the Boxyard outpost shut down in 2022, dealing with supply chain challenges and staffing shortages.
Bill Fairbanks died in 2022 at age 68, having lived for years with a terminal illness. He had stepped back from the restaurant in 2017, after his physical abilities became limited.
